“I periodically check my kids’ browser histories. I discovered my child had visited some sites that were questionable, but my child denied having done so.
Fear makes us withdraw – we fear the stranger, the what-if’s – and we don’t reach out to those who could help perhaps because we fear their response. Knowing what my child is exposing himself to informs how I begin discussions that can lead to a feeling of safety; the idea that it’s “safe” to talk to parents and they can help.
The PC Tattletale software, though I have feelings of being “sneaky”, allows me the access to my child’s world that he has been afraid to give me and helps me know what his needs are.
I realized how measures of “privacy” and “security” intended to protect have actually made it more difficult for me as a parent to be the protector and guide for my child.”
